Alternative Master of Arts in Education

The Alternative Master of Arts in Education degree at the University of Mobile is available in early childhood education or elementary education. Alternative certifications apply only to persons who have completed baccalaureate degrees in non-education programs from accredited colleges or universities.

 

The Alternative Masters Certification is offered in a blended (on-campus and online) format. These programs provide you with:

  • Easy access to faculty members with small class sizes.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

This master’s degree is designed for students who graduated in any major OTHER than a Major in Education that leads to a Teaching Certificate. The GRE or MAT entrance exam is NOT required.

 

To be eligible to apply for this Master’s Degree the following is required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a Regionally or Nationally accredited institution (required when applying to UM)
  • Bachelor’s Degree posted transcript GPA must be a 2.75 or higher (required when applying to UM)
  • TWO (2) Official Transcripts from ALL institutions attended (required before end of 1st semester)
  • 12 semester hours each of English, Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Science coursework (or pass all sections of the praxis II within first 12 hours of coursework)

 

To be Unconditionally Admitted to the School of Education Master’s program the following must be completed:

  • Fingerprint Clearance (required 1st Semester and before observing in any classroom)
  • Passing results on all sections of the Praxis I – Core Academic Basic Skills Test (required within first 12 hours of coursework)
  • Passing results on all sections of the Praxis II Content Knowledge Test – depending on your major, you will take either the Early Childhood OR Elementary Praxis II Test (required within first 12 hours of coursework)
  • Purchase Graduate Teacher Education Handbook from the UM Bookstore (required 1st semester)

*Students must apply for internship (TE 523) at least one academic period (semester) prior to doing the internship. The internship requirements include:

  1. A completed application;
  2. A 3.25 GPA on all graduate courses (with no grade less than a “C”);
  3. Approval by the teacher education council;
  4. Satisfactory completion of all deficiency courses and general studies courses;
  5. Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 205 hours of approved field experiences;
  6. Passing scores on the Alabama Educator Certification Assessment Program (AECAP) and the appropriate Praxis II Content Knowledge Test(s);
  7. Passing score on PRAXIS II Teaching Reading Test and on the appropriate Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) test.
