This academic year University of Mobile will hold its 10th Annual Honor Band Festival, February 7 – 9, 2019. We are, as always, excited about this year’s event and think we have something both extremely worthwhile and highly enjoyable for you!

Due to continuing requests, the deadline has been extended to January 9.

Easy Application Process

To begin your application click here.

The Deadline for Applications and Nomination Forms is November 19.

While you do not audition to get into the UMobile Honor Band, there ARE chair placement auditions upon arrival. All first chair players will be awarded a University of Mobile scholarship.

Woodwind and Brass:

-Two (2) major scales of your choice as many octaves as you can comfortably play them. Choose one “Flat” scale and one “Sharp” scale.

-Prepare a short piece (etude, solo excerpt, etc.) to demonstrate your technique, tone and musicianship. We will be able to listen to no more than about 30 seconds of this piece.

-Sight reading.

***Bass Clarinet players need to also bring a Bb clarinet and be prepared to audition on that instrument as well. The number of bass clarinetists we use will depend on how we can best balance that section with the size and strength of the clarinet section.***

Percussionists should audition in as many of the following categories as possible.
You must provide your own mallets and sticks.

-Snare: -2 rudiments (double stroke and either a paradiddle or flam rudiment)
-Sight reading.

-Mallets: -A chromatic scale and another major scale of your choosing
-Sight reading.

-Timpani: -Play a note given by adjudicator on a mallet instrument and then tune
a drum to that pitch. You will then need to tune another drum a specific interval above that pitch.

University of Mobile Band Scholarships will be awarded to all First Chair Players!

The cost for the honor band is $75 ($10 non-refundable application fee and $65 registration fee upon acceptance). This fee covers 3 meals, Honor Band t-shirt, Honor Band medal, Honor Band name tag, clinician, etc.

During Honor Band there will be dynamic performances from outstanding University of Mobile instrumental ensembles – RamCorps, The Symphonic Winds, Welsh Revival, and
the UM Jazz Band. This great week will conclude with a performance by the Honor Band, led by guest conductor, Mr. Artie Adams.

All UM Performances are Free of Charge and Open to Students, Directors and Chaperones
The Final Honor Band Concert is Free of Charge and Open to the Public.

Concert Dress is your high school concert band uniform. Daily dress will be casual, but modest and respectful. (No bare midriffs, no shirts with inappropriate language or designs, no short skirts or shorts, etc.)
