Why Business Management?

Phillip Maddox Business, Learning

I recently changed my major to Business Management and, in the short few months that I have made the change, the Lord has been so faithful in showing me why this change was the right one.

Business Management has challenged me by making me think but, more specifically, to think about others first.

Getting a business degree opens up a vast world of jobs, from being a business analyst, to marketing, to many more. A business degree can teach you the ins and outs of a business. It not only teaches you customer service skills and how to speak to customers, but it teaches you how to seek the interests of your employees by creating a healthy work environment that helps them enjoy coming to work. You get to learn the basics behind managing a business and seeing how it runs behind the scenes.

I have the amazing opportunity to serve at Redemption Church in the student ministry as the cafe director. Although this is not a stand-alone business, I still must think of the students as my customers because I am there to please their needs and/or wants. I have to continuously make note of what they like and want, in order to ensure that they are happy. Letting the customer know that they are seen and that they are heard is an extremely vital part of managing a business. We focus a lot on learning that in our business classes here at the University of Mobile.

I love being a Business Management major because it challenges me. It challenges me not only to be a leader, but a Christ-centered leader. It challenges me to step out of my comfort zone and connect with people to truly seek their interests over mine. I love my major because, through my learning, I am challenged to seek the needs of others more than my own.

Serving is my heart, and I enjoy every second of it. Business Management teaches you to seek the interests of others, whether customer or employee, and to make their needs greater than your own. I think that is what we are called to do as the body of Christ. We are called, like Galatians 5:13 says, to serve one another in love. Romans 12:10 calls us to outdo one another in love and honor. We are called to show the love of Christ through our daily actions so that people will know that Christ lives in us. That is why I chose to be a Business Management major.
