University Controller

Job Title: University Controller

Reports to: Vice President for Business Affairs

Work Schedule: 4-day work schedule. Monday – Thursday (7:30 – 5:30)

 

Job summary:

The Controller provides leadership and management oversight for the operations of University general accounting and financial reporting and taxation. The Controller is responsible for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of accounting records, overseeing production of timely financial reporting, recommending and maintaining appropriate fiscal policies and internal controls, and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and university policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Christian who is an active member in local church.
  • Supports Statement of Christian Affirmation (https://umobile.edu/about/mission/)
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Certified Public Accountant is required.
  • 3 to 5 years related accounting experience with at least 2 to 3 years of experience in supervisory roles

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience with fund accounting in the higher education industry.
  • 6 to 8 years related accounting experience

Position Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates the Imago Dei of Christ (Gen 1:26) in all aspects of one’s professional role, personal interactions and community relations.
  • Supervises employees of the Controller’s office (general accounting, financial reporting, and taxation), providing strong leadership in building and maintaining effective teams. Approximately 7-9 staff members report to the Controller.
  • Ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), federal and state laws including tax regulations, and university fiscal related policies. o Responsible for sales tax submission for product/athletic ticket sales
  • Preparation of Forms 990 and 1120
  • Completes the EzAudit on-line submission
  • Maintains the general ledger and controls the chart of accounts, including the determination of proper classification of funds and accounts; ensures financial transactions are properly captured and recorded in the financial system in accordance with GAAP. o Assists departments with budget questions
  • Assesses cash flow needs throughout the fiscal year
  • Ensures timely and accurate financial reporting pursuant to various internal and external reporting requirements; oversees the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting and compliance. Coordinates the annual external financial and compliance audits.
  • Develops and promulgates policies and procedures; directs analyzing, improving and implementing financial systems and processes; maintains effective system of internal controls over financial operations.
  • Recommends enhancements to policies, procedures, processes and controls. Provides leadership in the use of technology to achieve administrative efficiencies.
  • Recommends and develops strategies and goals to meet University objectives, and to support sound fiscal management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
