MOBILE, Ala. – The Alabama School of the Arts at University of Mobile is hosting the work of artist Sara Bowen. This exhibit will be on display Nov. 1-30 in the Donald Gallery on campus.

An Art Talk will be held with Bowen on Nov. 30 at 11 a.m. with a reception following.

Both the exhibit and Art Talk are free and open to the public.

The Donald Gallery is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is located in Martin Hall on campus at University of Mobile, 5735 College Pkwy.

Bowen’s exhibit, titled “Works,” will feature some of her first double-walled vases, her current functional pottery, and pieces from her recent installation called “Light + Stone: a quiet space out of the elements.”

A native of Monroeville, Alabama and currently based in Huntsville, Bowen’s pieces showcase Alabama’s “fecund environment, as well as family histories, handspun fibers, and light-play.” Nearly every piece in the show is made from wheelthrown clay, either stoneware or porcelain, wound and sewn with handspun wool.

“Both clay and fiber have sustained our species for thousands of years, keeping us warm and cooking food for our bellies,” explains Bowen. “Not only do my chosen materials nod to our ancient ancestors, but raw stoneware and wool also feel somewhat natural. Unlike the gilded, jeweled, shining interiors of medieval cathedrals, my botanic pots of stone and wool feel like something you could come across in an enchanted Alabama forest.”
