MOBILE, Ala. – High school students who attend the eighth annual University of Mobile Honor Band 2017 have two unique opportunities – to earn a college scholarship and to perform the world premiere of an original work for band, conducted by composer Steve Dunn.
UM Honor Band is a three-day musically challenging and inspiring high school band program set for Feb. 9-11, 2017, on the University of Mobile campus.
High school band instrumentalists are invited to apply and band directors may nominate students for UM Honor Band by Nov. 21. Application and nomination forms, along with additional information about the program, are online at umobile.edu/honorband. Cost is $75 and includes meals and Honor Band T-shirt.
Registration and chair place auditions will be Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at Martin Hall on the UM campus, located off I-65 at Exit 13, at 5735 College Pkwy., Mobile, AL 36613. Students earning first chair will be awarded band scholarships to University of Mobile.
UM Honor Band is directed by Dunn, assistant professor of instrumental music at UM and internationally recognized composer. Guest clinician is Christ Neugent, director of bands at Spain Park High School in Hoover, AL. Neugent’s bands have received Superior ratings at contests and festivals in every area of area of performance – symphonic, marching and jazz.
UM Honor Band will present a concert at the conclusion of the program. Also, students will hear performances by UM ensembles including RamCorps, Symphonic Winds, Welsh Revival and the UM Jazz Band. All performances are free of charge for students, band directors and chaperones.
