MOBILE, Ala. – University of Mobile announced today the appointment of Joseph M. Wiegand as chief financial officer and legal counsel.
Wiegand will begin his new role at UM on June 18. He was hired following a nationwide search.
Wiegand will serve on the president’s cabinet, oversee UM’s business and financial operations, and serve as university legal counsel. He will be responsible for areas including information technology, facilities, vendor relations and contracts, and security.
He currently serves in a similar capacity at Truett McConnell University in Cleveland, Georgia, where he also serves as dean of the Sattler School of Public Service and associate professor of law and government.
UM President Timothy L. Smith said Wiegand’s extensive experience in Christian higher education makes him an excellent addition to University of Mobile, which is in a period of rapid growth and development. In the nearly two years that Smith has served as president, the university has rebranded, added a number of academic programs with more in process, opened the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Practice, and developed innovative initiatives including a four-day academic week and a concierge model of customer service.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Joe to University of Mobile. His expertise across a broad array of areas, from finance and management to information technology and the law, makes him a valuable addition to our senior leadership team as we continue to move the university forward,” Smith said.
Wiegand said the move is exciting both professionally and personally.
“University of Mobile is very well respected, and it plays an important role along the Gulf Coast region,” Wiegand said. “I firmly believe in the value and importance of Christian higher education. It equips the student not just with knowledge of their chosen subject, but, more importantly, a deeper truth.”
The move brings his family closer to their extended family along the Gulf Coast. He and his wife, Michelle, have three children: Maeve, 15; Gunnar, 11; and Declan, 6.
Since 2013, Wiegand has served in various roles at Truett McConnell University, including vice president for finance and operations, chief financial officer, general counsel, dean of the Sattler School of Public Service, associate vice president for academic services, and associate professor of law and government.
Previously, he was associate dean of internal affairs and online programs at the Liberty University School of Law in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he also taught undergraduate and graduate courses in law, business and politics.
He was vice president and director of operations at ccAdvertising in Herndon, Virginia, where he directed political and commercial campaign strategy and business operations.
Wiegand is a member of the New Jersey bar, American Bar Association, New Jersey Bar Association, and the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in American public affairs and social relations from Michigan State University.
He conducted legal studies at Notre Dame School of Law in London, England, and holds a Master of Arts in public policy from Regent University School of Government and the Juris Doctor from Regent University School of Law, both in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Wiegand holds a Master of Laws from University of London, King’s College in London, England. He is expected to complete this year a Doctor of Education with a specialization in educational leadership from Liberty University.
