University of Mobile Board to Begin Presidential Search, Announces Interim President

Kathy Dean News

MOBILE, Ala. –The University of Mobile Board of Trustees today announced plans for interim leadership of the university and will start a nationwide search for a new president.

Current Board of Trustees Chairman Fred Wilson was named interim president. David Conner will assume the role of chairman of the Board of Trustees. President Emeritus Dr. Mark Foley will serve as a consultant while the search begins for the university’s fifth president.

The board made the announcement following its regularly scheduled meeting Friday, March 1. This change in leadership is the result of the Feb. 25 resignation of the fourth president, Dr. Tim Smith, who cited personal reasons.

“The Board of Trustees is committed to building on the university’s forward momentum. Immediately having leadership in place who are already knowledgeable about the university will enable University of Mobile to continue its mission without missing a beat,” Wilson said.

Wilson, who has served on the Board of Trustees for over 12 years and was beginning his third term as chairman, immediately begins his role as interim president.

Wilson previously served as a partner in P.J. Lumber Co. of Mobile, where he handled international sales and export marketing. He retired in 2017. Conner is an attorney with Blackburn & Conner P.C., headquartered in Bay Minette, Alabama.
