MOBILE, Ala. – Students at University of Mobile met representatives from local churches and ministries at “For the Church and City,” an expo event on campus aimed at getting students connected quickly with local churches as fall semester began.

Churches ranging in size from small church plants to established mega-churches hoped to give students a place to plug in and serve while at college.

Director of University Ministries Chase Alford shared the purpose behind helping students build a strong connection with a local church, in addition to participating in university ministries events.

“I realize that university ministries has an expiration date (when students graduate and leave campus). But the local church doesn’t. My hope is to connect students to ministries within the city so that they can grow spiritually while at college,” Alford said.

About 150 church leaders and volunteers met and mingled with students on the Christian college’s campus. They represented 25 churches and 8 ministries throughout Mobile and Baldwin counties, and gave students a wide variety of ministries to engage with.

Representatives Ariel Fleming and Susan Scott of Habitat for Humanity shared information with students that each home the organization builds for low income families requires 2,000 hours of labor.

“We’re always needing volunteers,” Scott said.
