MOBILE, Ala. – Dr. Todd Greer, dean of the University of Mobile School of Business and co-founder of Exchange 202, helped a local elementary school gain national recognition as one of “America’s Entrepreneurial Schools.”

Greer was on hand Monday, Sept. 18, as Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Martha Peek announced the selection of Mary B. Austin Elementary School for the national designation by the National Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education (Entre-Ed).

Elementary, middle and high schools that bring entrepreneurship education and activities to every student in their building during a school year are eligible to receive this prestigious national designation. Mary B. Austin Elementary is the first school in Alabama to earn this honor.

Greer joined UM in July as dean of the School of Business, where he is expanding opportunities for students to gain real-world experience and internships in business development, entrepreneurship and community engagement. He is an active partner in Exchange 202, a shared workspace community in the heart of downtown Mobile. He continues to work with other business incubator programs in addition to supporting entrepreneurship education like the award-winning program at Mary B. Austin Elementary.

Greer said, “The workforce of today and tomorrow necessitate strong critical thinking skills, the ability to collaborate, and the confidence to tackle real problems. Daily we teach these skills in the School of Business at University of Mobile, and it has been a pleasure to help promote and model these in the program with Mary B. Austin Elementary School.”

Mary B. Austin Elementary Principal Dr. Amanda Jones said, “Thanks to partnerships with local entrepreneurs and innovators, our students are being exposed to 21st century and life skills that prepare them to become outside-the-box thinkers ready to take on future careers that in many cases have yet to be invented.”

Mary B. Austin Elementary serves about 500 students in grades kindergarten through five and is a National Blue Ribbon School. Students there call themselves “Austin Innovators.”
