MOBILE, Ala. – Capt. Dave Sumner of University of Mobile’s Department of Public Safety was awarded “Supervisor of the Year” by National Association of Campus Safety Administrators.

“His dedication to the department, the university, and the profession is unmatched,” read Sumner’s nomination, submitted anonymously.

Kim Browder, director of Public Safety, was also chosen as one of three finalists in Campus Safety Magazine’s “Safety Director of the Year Award.”

The department’s awards and achievements provided a basis for the nominations. In 2016, University of Mobile ranked “Safest College in Alabama” by BackgroundChecks.org, “4th Safest College in Alabama” by Niche.com, and “16th Safest College in America” by CollegeChoice.net. Additionally, seven officers of the department’s 11 qualified for marksmanship ribbons in 2017.

Sumner and Browder’s many contributions to these rankings include becoming instructors for active threat response, and training professors and student leaders on appropriate protocol. They also implemented Operation ID, a program for students and staff to record important serial numbers for valuables, to be used in recovery efforts if stolen. They created community outreach programs for topics like impairment awareness. Additionally, the department centralized and automated reporting, ticketing and dispatching.
