University of Mobile Presents ‘Uncharted Blue’ Art Exhibit by Alumna Caroline Ennis

Caroline Ennis ’16

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile presents alumna Caroline Ennis’s “Uncharted Blue” art exhibit in the Marilyn Foley Art Gallery in Ben May Hall.

Caroline Ennis is a visual artist whose work stems from her life-long relationship to the Gulf Coast and the coastline of the northwest Florida Panhandle. She uses installation and sculptural methods that include ceramic, fiber, drawing and unfired clay to explore ways to reflect the coastline’s familiarity and the obscurity of the deep water.

Her works will be on display from Aug. 17 to Sept. 30. The gallery is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Ennis will deliver a free artist talk on Zoom Sept. 24 at 11 a.m.

Ennis completed her Master of Fine Arts from Florida State University in 2020 and Bachelor of Arts in studio art from the University of Mobile in 2016. In 2019, Ennis attended a funded artist residency at Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. While at FSU, Ennis received the 2019 MFA Award, the 2020 Ceramics Award, the 2020 MFA Award, and was nominated for the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture.

Known for Faith: Alumni Spotlight – Mary Wiley

Mary Wiley

The University of Mobile prepares students for all areas of life, service and faith. Mary Wiley is just one example.

“UM continued to cultivate the growing love I had for the Church and for God’s people to know and love Him well,” says Mary Wiley, author of “Everyday Theology.”

Wiley graduated from the University of Mobile in 2009 and majored in English and Christian studies. She is now the manager of marketing at B&H Publishing Group. Wiley also just published her first book, “Everyday Theology, an 8-session Bible study walking thro

ugh the key doctrines of the Christian faith.

“Through this process, I’ve seen God help others better understand truths about Scripture, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Humanity, Redemption, Church, and the End Times. I’m praying that other churches use this and see God grow and mold those who walk through it to better understand Scripture and how the truths of Scripture apply to their everyday lives, with the goal of more rightly knowing and worshiping God,” says Wiley.

Wiley’s time at UM prepared her for exactly where she is today.

“These programs prepared me well with instruction in Systematic Theology and in writing in a way that communicates clearly,” she says.

Wiley says that professors modeled what they were teaching. She had some university leaders play a role in getting her where she is today, as well. Wiley says, “I had some leaders who gave me opportunities to lead others and to develop plans for ministry, which have been incredibly valuable in all ministry settings.”

While a student at UM, Wiley also participated in Campus Ministries, served as a resident assistant for a year, and ran cross country for two seasons.

University of Mobile Professor’s Music Featured in ‘Muse of Dior’ Documentary

MOBILE, Ala. – University of Mobile professor and Steinway Artist Dr. Kadisha Onalbayeva composed the music for a new documentary, “Muse of Dior,” about Alla Ilchun, the world’s first supermodel from Kazakhstan. The documentary explores the life of Ilchun, who was considered the inspiration for French fashion designer Christian Dior.

Illchun and Onalbayeva are both of Kazakh origin. Onalbayeva wrote the song “Alla” for the documentary.

“I was excited to get to be a part of this documentary because of my connection with the fashion industry and the fact that Alla made the move to Paris as an immigrant with a dream. I came to America with the dream to be a musician – I feel connected to Alla and her story,” says Onalbayeva.

She was connected to the producer and director of “Muse of Dior,” Berlin Irisheff, and offered to produce an original composition that is used throughout the film.

“Alla” was produced at the Fisher-Brewer Recording Studio on the University of Mobile campus with Chris Springer, director of the university’s 8Eighty Records.

Onalbayeva’s mother was a fashion designer, so the fashion industry is close to the music professor’s heart, making it even more special for her to be a part of the “Muse of Dior” documentary.

The movie has already premiered in Paris and Kazakhstan. The documentary will premiere in the United States and be available globally in coming months.

Onalbayeva will head to Paris in November and present “Alla” at The American Church in Paris.

Reflections on Being Miss UM 2020

Abigail Breland, Miss University of Mobile 2020

This year hasn’t turned out like anyone planned. Due to the pandemic, life changed, dramatically, but many University of Mobile students are able to find the silver lining in all of the chaos. I asked Miss University of Mobile 2020, nursing major Abigail Breland from Little Rock, Arkansas, to reflect on these times as she prepares to represent UM at the Miss Alabama Competition.

Here is Abigail’s response:

Being Miss University of Mobile during a pandemic has caused me to think even more deeply about my university. No, this is not how I expected my year as Miss UM to begin, but I am so thankful that I still have the opportunity to represent my school.

We often don’t realize the blessings we have until they are taken away. This season has reminded me how blessed we are to be students at UM. Because of my family’s involvement (as students, alumni and professors), the University of Mobile has been a part of my life since I was two years old. I would dream of one day being a student, and even about being Miss UM. My babysitters were former Miss UM contestants!

I have loved every minute that I have been able to be a Ram.

I am so thankful for the faculty and staff that are always there to help and support in any way that they can. My story really is a dream come true!

Now as I prepare for Miss Alabama, I have the opportunity to share my platform, Tru.Identity, with people of all ages. It’s not just UM students that have a higher purpose. As Miss UM, I want every person to know that they should never be defined by a failure, disability, or a label, but that their true identity is found in the unique individual that they were created to be.
