A Spectacular Christmas Story: International Student Finds Success at University of Mobile

When Lisa Rosado Rivera was a child in San Juan, Puerto Rico, her family had an annual tradition of watching the University of Mobile’s Christmas Spectacular on satellite television. This week as the university presents the 21st Christmas Spectacular on Nov. 16 – 19, Lisa will be on stage singing with the UM Jazz Band, tap dancing with SoFree, and performing with the University Singers.

“I found out about the University of Mobile because of a tradition my parents and I had every Christmas of watching Christmas Spectacular broadcast on Daystar,” Lisa said. “My dad found the televised program around 15 years ago, and we loved it so much we decided to make it a tradition of watching it every year.

“Before I decided to pursue my master’s degree, I had completely forgotten about UM as an option, but my parents had this school in their hearts and reminded me of our tradition. I came here in the fall of 2021; it has been a blast and such a great journey!”

Lisa is an international student at the University of Mobile, just a few weeks away from graduating with a Master of Music in vocal performance. She spent much of her educational life far from her birth home, receiving a double bachelor’s degree from Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana, before joining the graduate program in the Alabama School of the Arts at the University of Mobile. In her two years at UM, Lisa has been seen singing, dancing, and stage-managing in multiple plays, musicals and operas for the Alabama School of the Arts.

Tickets are still available to attend Christmas Spectacular at Cottage Hill Baptist Church on Nov. 16-19. Read on to learn more about Lisa’s journey at the University of Mobile.

What has it been like to pursue your master’s degree at the University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts?

“Being a graduate student here has been an interesting journey for me, especially as an international student. I did not expect to grow as much vocally the way that I have, and it has been so much fun to discover my voice and put all my skills into practice here with all the events at the University of Mobile and ASOTA. It has been better than I could have ever imagined.”

How do you stay connected to your culture and your roots so far from home?

“For starters, my language. My first language is Spanish, and my second language is English, so I speak Spanish whenever I see other Latinos on campus or whenever I talk to my friends and family back home. Secondly, food! I am not the best cook, but I’d love to cook you some Puerto Rican food. Third, I love to share our traditions, dances, holidays and backgrounds. The history is so diverse, and I want to connect with others on campus and show each other our cultures.”

How has UM helped shape your experience here as an international student?

“It is interesting being an international student here in the States because Puerto Rico is not always considered ‘international’ since it is a commonwealth of America. We are still citizens of the U.S., just without certain rights such as voting for the President. Here, I have never felt set apart or separated from the people who have been born and raised here in the States.

Something else I love about Mobile that I did not know until I traveled here was how diverse this city is. There are so many international students here from all over the world. I get opportunities to share my background and culture with others here, and they get to do the same for me.”

What has your experience been like with the community of students here as an international student?

Lisa with coffee

“Most international students here are in athletics, so as a music major, I do not get to spend much time with them during the day; but I have gotten to know a few. As a Latina myself, I relate easiest with other Latinos and Latinas, which is something I immediately began looking for when I moved onto campus. The first person that I found was Shadoe Valentin, a Latino staff member in ASOTA. He helped me branch out and get to know more people through the international club here. I learned that no matter where you are from, it is your passion, faith and drive that will set you up for success.”

What would you say to potential international students considering studying at the University of Mobile?

“It is important to have a great, diverse community for everyone to join and be together. A lot of international students go through periods of being homesick no matter how far away they are from home, but it is important that community is a family for international and national students.

“That’s what we have here at the University of Mobile. It is tight-knit and creates special bonds that can be kept forever and go beyond graduation. From the start, you will always have people receiving you, inviting you, making you feel welcome, and making sure you are okay. That is what community is about, especially for international students since we don’t have our families that close. It is an invitation, and it is up to us as international students to accept it and dive into our ‘Higher Education for a Higher Purpose.’”

Anna Katherine Bell Crowned Miss University of Mobile 2024

AK

MOBILE, Ala. – Senior early childhood and elementary education major Anna Katherine Bell of Dothan, Alabama, was welcomed as Miss University of Mobile 2024 on Oct. 13.

Bell will serve as a representative for the Christian university until January 2025, which will make her the second-longest-reigning Miss UM in the history of the school as the competition shifts from fall semester to spring semester.

“This feels absolutely surreal,” said Bell. “I’m so excited and just really looking forward to meeting all the new people.”

Anna

Her platform as Miss University of Mobile is “The Growth Project,” in which she plans focus on growth – personally and physically – for both the campus and its students.

“Daylilies are known to be the most resilient flower – being able to grow and bloom under almost any condition,” Bell remarked. “Our life is a lot like a flower in the way that we wish to grow and bloom, yet some of us let the storms of life take us away and wither us before we ever get a chance to see our first bloom. ‘The Growth Project’ is an initiative aimed to transform the outside of our school with a daylily garden while also impacting the inside of our students – a landmark reminder to always keep blooming.”

Along with Bell, who also received the People’s Choice Award, the other competitors who earned honors at the Miss University of Mobile competition were:

  • Rebekah Hicks from Franklin, Alabama, placed first runner-up. She received $3,000 in scholarships.
  • Caitlyn Ozee from Bourbonnais, Illinois, placed second second-up and won the talent award. She received $2,500 in scholarships.
  • Molly Grace Watkins from Birmingham, Alabama, placed third runner-up. She received $1,000 in scholarships.
  • Kennedy Bradford from Vernon, Alabama, placed fourth runner-up and won the newly introduced scholastics award. She received $1,000 in scholarships.
  • Kiersten Pettaway from Daphne, Alabama, won Miss Congeniality. She received $350 in scholarships.

The university also bid farewell to Miss University of Mobile 2023, Michaella Johnson, as she took her emotional and touching final walk as Miss UM. Johnson performed “I 2 I” by Tevin Campbell, igniting the crowd one last time with her powerhouse vocals.

“My last night as Miss University of Mobile has been stunning and bitter-sweet, but what a way to go out with a bang,” said Johnson. “All of the girls tonight did a phenomenal job, and I am so honored to have gotten to share the stage with them. I am so happy to pass the mantle on to Anna Katherine. She is so deserving.”

The school also crowned Tiago Sarmento, an international student from Portugal, as the new Mr. University of Mobile 2024.

How to Navigate Campus Life as a Commuting Student

Before I started my freshmen year of college at the University of Mobile, I was worried that I would miss out on having the “college experience” as a commuting student. I knew I would be balancing travel time and both part-time and full-time jobs, and I thought I would not have the ability to participate in campus events. Now as a senior who has been a commuter all four years, it became abundantly clear that it is possible and easy to get plugged into college life. The University of Mobile makes it so easy to get involved on campus while living from home.

Keep up with Student Life schedules and updates.

The University of Mobile has a ton of student life events every month in which all students can participate. Subscribe to the student life Instagram page, check the weekly Rundown emails sent to your school email, and watch out for “Text Tuesdays” every week that lay out any upcoming events.

Find extracurricular activities that fit with your schedule.

The University of Mobile features over 30 clubs, organizations and extracurriculars that are mostly open to all students regardless of major. Activity fairs will be held a couple times a year for students to gather and experience all the options the university has to offer. You can also find flyers and posters up all over campus for when different events are happening for various clubs.

Access the university calendar for important dates.

Our public university calendar can be found online at umobile.edu/calendar with every major department event throughout the year. It includes events from the Alabama School of the Arts’ performing arts series, the athletic department’s games and tournaments, society and club meetings, and school holidays.

Set your work schedule around campus activities.

By having access to the university calendar, you will know the dates of all the events you would like to attend. You can then plan and accordingly schedule proper hours based on the event schedule.

Participate in events on campus outside of your field of study.

The University of Mobile hosts various events, such as Student Life’s karaoke nights, intramural sports, and the ASOTA Performing Arts Series, that are open for anyone to participate in. It will give you a chance to fill your time on campus doing something fun without worrying about your major.

Make friends in your classes.

Finding friends in college can sometimes be a struggle, but making the effort to get to know the people in your classes is a great start. You create connections in the classroom that can be carried outside of the classroom to spark a real friendship. Having friends on campus makes it way easier to spend your entire day on campus as a commuter, especially if they are a residential student who will let you hang in their dorm room with them.

University of Mobile’s Piano Ensemble Presents “Dancing with Pianos” Concert Oct. 26

MOBILE, Ala. –  The worlds of classical music and technical choreography merge as the Alabama School of the Arts presents the next performance in the 7th Annual University of Mobile Piano Festival “Dancing with Pianos.”

“Dancing with Pianos” will be presented Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in Moorer Auditorium on the University of Mobile campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Dr. Kadisha Onalbayeva, director of piano studies and professor of music, and Barbara G. Haines, classical ballet instructor, are the director and choreographer behind this program that will show the audience the best from the worlds of both classical music and technical dance.

group

This concert will feature UM’s Piano Ensemble. The group consists of the following students: Rebecca M. Reed, Gaukhar Kenessova, Alison Strunk, Benjamin Naman, Brea Harris, Bryson East, Christopher Conger, Emily Thullesen, Jeremy Downey, Lily Caswell, Logan Lipke, Luke Graham, and Marc Marquis.

The performance will also feature four students dancing alongside the pianists. The student dancers are: Lisa Rosado Rivera, Gregory Naman, Anna Geter, and Malik Johnson.

“We will introduce a variety of dance music that is a blend of established well-known works combined with some lesser-known contemporary compositions,” said Onalbayeva. “The Piano Ensemble will perform arrangements for four-hands and eight-hands and will coordinate their performance with four dancers who are taking dance classes taught by Barbara Haines.  This program will be an interesting combination of great music with the skilled visual effect of the dancers.”

Haines added, “The significance for dancers and pianists working together in this collaboration is ‘To see the music and hear the dance, – as George Balanchine once said. From the late 18th century there was a separation between music and dance. There was no one composer who would create music for dance. In “Dancing with Pianos,” we can hear piano compositions prior to and after this era. Darius Milhaud’s “Brasileira,” Debussy’s “En Blanc et Noir” and “Tulebaev Dance” are best representing how music’s emotional and energetic charge was able to break the boundaries and to form a seamless synergy with dance once again.”

MOBILE, Ala. – The Alabama School of the Arts  at the University of Mobile presents the play “These Shining Lives” by Melanie Marnich as the first event of their 2023-2024 Performing Arts Series.

“These Shining Lives” chronicles the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day, exploring their true story and its continued resonance. “I am always excited to perform my piano work ‘Ditto’ alongside some of the Gulf Coast’s finest composers and am honored to have been asked to take part of this event again,” said Reed. “Being among the group of composers and witnessing our works performed on stage always inspires me to continue creating and learning from others.”

Benjamin Naman, a sophomore piano performance major with a secondary in composition, is also thrilled to share his work.

“At this year’s ComposerFest, I’ll be performing a piano solo I composed titled ‘Aspiritio.’ That is the Latin word for aspirations,” said Naman. “I feel incredibly honored to have the chance to share my work with other composers on the Gulf Coast, and I can’t wait to start performing.”

Luke Graham, a sophomore piano performance major with a secondary in composition, gave insight on the excitement he has felt for this concert.

Alabama School of the Arts Releases Live Recording of ‘Prayer Room’

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile’s Alabama School of the Arts released official recordings of last semester’s inaugural “Prayer Room.”

The event was held April 24 in Ram Hall.

Prayer Room is a gathering of students for a night of worship and prayer led by the newly founded UM Worship Collective, a community of worship leaders and songwriters consisting of students, alumni, faculty and staff from the University of Mobile. The Worship Collective serves to lead UM chapels in genuine expressions of worship.

Dr. Andrew Goodwin, dean of the Alabama School of the Arts, said, “For the last 20 years it has been a part of the culture in ASOTA for students to gather before performances for a time of prayer and worship. These special times together have always been called ‘Prayer Room.’”
