Where Will Your Degree Take You? – Elmer Colubio III

Elmer Colubio III, a senior finance major at the University of Mobile, has always wanted to be in the banking industry as a loan officer or a financial advisor, and his degree and experience are helping him get there.

“I’ve always been interested in money. I love saving, and I know that my finance degree is going to help me get certified to help others with money. The stock market is one of those things that’s so beneficial as long as you’ve learned the ins and outs of the market. The University of Mobile is helping me learn how to analyze statements and balance sheets for future investment decisions,” said Elmer.

Because of the smaller class sizes, Elmer has been able to build relationships with his professors. Dr. Kathy Dunning, dean of the School of Business at UM, has helped him acquire internships with local business to build his resume and prepare him for work after graduation.

“Personal Finance was one of my favorite classes. It helped me learn how to manage my money and wealth. Dr. Sevints Nuriyeva, associate professor of global business and management at UM, has helped me get out of my shell. Her classes are very interactive, and they help me think outside the box and get me out of my comfort zone,” said Elmer.

Where will your degree take you – Trent Short

Growing up with a basketball coach as a father, Trent Short saw the impact his father had on his players. The senior basketball player at the University of Mobile wants to follow in his father’s footsteps and make that same kind of impact.

“I’ve seen the impact that coaches can have on players and I hope to do that. Coach Archey, the University of Mobile men’s basketball coach, has done a great job of building relationships with us as players. He’s shown me how important it is to build relationships with guys, so they want to play for you, and they want to do the right things off the court as well,” said Trent.

Trent says the small campus of UM helps him learn how to build those personal relationships with students and professors that he’ll one day use as a coach.

“Everybody is friendly, and everyone knows each other. If you ever need anything, it’s really easy to ask another student, since we’re all in the same situation together. With the small classes, it’s also easy to reach out to professors as well, since they’ll remember your name and are happy to help out.”

Studying Kinesiology, Trent hopes to get a graduate assistant position at a Division 1 school to kick start his coaching career. He knows that Kinesiology can help him know more about his future players and prepare him to be a teacher as well.

“Dr. Lori Delong (dean of the School of Health and Sports Science) has been a huge help for me. She’s made me enjoy Kinesiology and made me think about teaching if I go into coaching high school basketball. She’s a fun teacher.”

Where will your degree take you – Hannah Colson

“I know my end goal of music, and I know there are so many steps in between that I don’t know about, but as long as I continue walking with Christ and keep that relationship strong, I don’t have anything to worry about because He will provide a way,” said Hannah Colson.

Hannah Colson is a sophomore creative writing major at the University of Mobile. She says her classes and internships have helped with her goals of going into the music industry after graduating. They’ve helped her be optimistic, but realistic, about her future plans.

“I want to go into the music industry, and the University of Mobile has helped me develop a plan to get there. Working on marketing strategies and creative writing will help me so much in my future career. The knowledge that I’ve acquired during my time at UM has helped me with song writing and taught me how to stand out in the music industry.”

Hannah works part-time in the Student Success Center as well in the registrar’s office. She said even during her short time working for UM, her supervisors have helped her become more professional and remind her that God’s plan will always prevail.

“Mrs. Shirley Sutterfield, the executive director of UM’s Student Success Center, has poured into me with my current job. She shows me the right way to work as well as best practices that could help me in the future. All of my coworkers provide such a Christ-centered work environment by reminding me to step away at times to pray and build my relationship with Christ,” Hannah said.

Where will your degree take you? – Elise Johnson

The Student Success Center at the University of Mobile has helped many students grow into their future careers. One of these students is Elise Johnson, a junior UM Ambassador working toward a double major in communication and English.

“My favorite thing about UM as far as pushing my degree forward has been the Student Success Center. I’ve been able to shadow a lot of successful people in the community such as the mayor’s communications coordinator and other public relations professionals in Mobile,” said Elise.

Shadowing and building relationships with local professionals has helped Elise prepare for a career while still in college by finding internships and giving her practical experience.

“It’s great to have the academics teaching me what to do, but it’s amazing to have the practical experience as well. I’m able to apply things I’ve learned from my internships into my classes, and it helps me see what I can actually do with my degree.”

Elise built these connections with the help of Lawrencine Mason, career services coordinator in the Student Success Center at the University of Mobile. Elise works part-time in the Student Success Center.

“A lot of people at UM have poured into me, especially Lawrencine. When I am working at the Student Success Center, Lawrencine checks in on me to make sure I know what my tasks are for the day, but she does more than that. She mentors me outside of work by making sure that I’m making time for myself, reading my bible in the morning, making sure that I am keeping up with all my work, and even checking in on me during breaks,” said Elise.

Everything that Elise learns at the University of Mobile will help with her future career goals of event planning.

“The connections I’ve been able to make while at UM will help me out in my future career. Every aspect of UM has prepared me to move forward through learning how to build and maintain personal connections with others.”

University of Mobile Presents Mozart and Salieri Operas on Jan. 29 & 31

MOBILE, Ala. – The Alabama School of the Arts at the University of Mobile will present a MainStage Opera double-bill performance of Mozart’s “The Impresario” and Salieri’s “Prima la Musica e poi le parole” on Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. and 31 at 2 p.m.

Performances will be held at Murphy High School, 100 S. Carlen St., Mobile, Alabama.

Tickets are $25 and attendance will be capped at 200 persons in order to abide by COVID-19 guidelines. For tickets and streaming options, please visit umobile.edu/pas or call the Alabama School of the Arts Box Office at 251.442.2383.

“In 1786, Emperor Joseph II commissioned Mozart and Salieri to write competing comic operas to show the dominance of German Singspiel or Italian opera buffa,” said Dr. Patrick Jacobs, director of opera and professor of music at the University of Mobile.

“Mozart wrote a Singspiel: ‘Der Schauspieldirektor’ (The Impresario) and Salieri composed an opera buffa: ‘Prima la musica e poi le parole’ (First the music and then the words). Our performance pairs these works again and gives our audience the opportunity to decide for themselves which piece is more beautiful and hilarious,” said Jacobs, who serves as producer and stage director for the productions

During Mozart’s “The Impresario,” The Impresario, Frank, must put together a company of actors and singers while dealing with their impulses, rivalries and hypocrisy. Actors and actresses are auditioned in a series of dramatic scenes, and as performers learn of each other’s varying wages and roles under which they were hired, jealousy and anger ensues.

Salieri’s “Prima La Musica e poi le parole” contracts a composer and poet to write a new opera in four days. The composer has already created the score, but the poet is crippled with writer’s block and, in desperation, attempts to adapt the lyrics he has already written to the existing music.

Both productions feature University of Mobile students, faculty and staff. Guest artist Curtis Tucker, artistic director of First Coast Opera, will serve as conductor and music director.

4 Reasons Why You Should Take a College Tour

A campus tour is one of the first times you get to step foot on a college campus and really feel at home. They give you the opportunity to learn more about academic programs, campus culture and anything else you might be curious about. The University of Mobile offers personal tours to make sure that each prospective student and their family is able to work directly with an admissions counselor to learn about UM and how to begin their college experience. Here are 4 reasons why you should take a college tour and how it can impact your college choice.

1. Seeing the campus gives you the opportunity to understand the atmosphere and culture of the university.
Stepping on campus can have a big impact on your college decision. It gives you a sense of belonging and can let you know what other students on campus are like. The University of Mobile campus tour lets you see the campus and understand what degrees are offered, while meeting professors and students along the way.

2. You get to ask specific questions you have about the university.
According to a study by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, more than a third of college students will transfer schools, so make sure that you attend a school that you love. College isn’t nonstop fun like is sometimes portrayed; it’s hard work. The more questions you’re able to ask admissions counselors, the more you’ll be prepared for college and know that you’ve chosen the right university. At the University of Mobile, you don’t have to worry about a big group tour. You and your family are directed by a personal admissions counselor in order to provide you with as much information as you need. Your UM admissions counselor will even provide you with their cell phone number to help out however they can.

3. Meeting professors can help you get a step ahead.
Professors are a big part of your college experience. They help you through classes, give you real world experience in your desired field, and can help you get jobs after you graduate. The University of Mobile has a 13:1 student faculty ratio in order to have small classes and make sure students have the opportunities to build relationships with their professors. UM campus visits ensure that you meet professors that are in your prospective field and begin building relationships even before classes begin.

4. You can earn scholarships just by attending a tour.
Just by attending a campus tour and applying to the University of Mobile, you automatically are awarded a $2,000 scholarship when you enroll, and a free application. You are also able to meet with the UM financial aid office to learn about other scholarships that are available.

Campus visits are an essential part of choosing a college. The more you learn about a university, the more you’ll be prepared to make your college decision. For more about how you can learn about the University of Mobile and to schedule a campus visit, please visit umobile.edu/visit.
