Bachelor of Science in Child & Social Development (Non-Certification)
The Bachelor of Science in Child and Social Development was designed to meet the growing need for Pre-K programs in private, religious and federal sites. The State of Alabama’s First Class Pre-K Program (or Office of School Readiness) will be opening new Pre-K sites. Therefore, college students are being urged to consider this career field. Federal Head Start programs now require lead teachers to have an earned bachelor’s degree, and the Child and Social Development major meets this requirement. The major also prepares graduates for careers in civic, social or religious organizations; hospitals or non-profit organizations; or family and community services.
The program is open to any qualified applicant. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 will be required for all courses counted toward the major with no grade less than a “C” in the major.

“The Child and Social Development major focuses on understanding and implementing developmentally appropriate practices when planning for instruction and assessment of young children from pre-K through eight years old. Many individuals who earn this degree often seek positions as directors of childcare facilities. Others use this degree to transition into an alternative master’s program to obtain certification in Early Childhood Education.”
